About Tarot - The Cards and Readings

Tarot 78 Cards

Tarot cards were used commonly in Europe before the 14th century.  They were used as playing cards and then later as a "divining tool".

Tarot - "life in motion". 78 cards in a deck.  Consisting of 22 Majors, 4 suits; from Ace to 10 (cups, swords, pentacles and wands) and 4 sets of court cards (kings, queens, knights and pages).

The story of Tarot

We start with the FOOL (0) as they set out on their path of life, full of innocence like a care-free child.  The fool is the seed - the beginning.  As he journeys along the road he will discover possibilities, resources, strengths, weaknesses, learn many life lessons, grow, mature, experience the up's and downs of life and ultimately discover himself.  Along the way he comes to a table.  This brings us to the next card the "Magician" (1).

On the table are 4 tools before the Magician.  A cup, wand, sword, pentacle.  4 different types of skills, qualities, energies, resources and talents that the Magician must master as he "lives and learns".  Each of these tools represents a suit in the Tarot.  Each suit has a different meaning and symbolizes talents in the material, work, emotional and intellectual realms of life.  We call these cards minor arcana.  The suits divine the path you are on, and the direction you are heading - the WHAT and HOW.

There are also 22 Major Arcana which tell us the life lessons being learnt along the way.  They WHY and LESSON.

The 16 court cards (king, queen, knight, page) sometimes referred to as "people cards" represent different personality traits - or how someone is acting in a situation.  They describe a role, attitude or behaviour about you, or the people around.  They can also represent occupations or the characteristics in a person.  The WHO.

We use these cards as a divining tool by laying them down in particular spreads.  The spread shows us the interactive relationship between each of the cards.  A reader looks at the pictures, colour, sequence of numbers, symbols, landscape, Majors, how they lay, odds/evens, the surrounding environment of the cards and interaction between one another and interprets the story.  The story is told as to where you are, and what could be.  Most often it is a confirmation of what you already know.  It is not set in concrete and is subject to change.  Remember you control the choices you make in life.  The tarot reader merely depicts and interprets the cards.  How they fall is how they are read.  There is no bad card in a tarot deck - merely a life lesson which one must learn and move through.

Tarot Readings

There are many different decks in tarot.  Denise uses the Rider Waite, Guilded Tarot, and Legacy of the divine tarot.  Readings are 1 hour and done from her reading room at home.  Denise obtained her Certificate in Tarot and Tarot Diploma, completing a years study with Fern Mercier, and is a member of the NZ Tarot Guild.  Tarot is so interesting - it's a subject one could research your whole life .....

I provide a warm, safe and confidential environment.  I work from a code of ethics and will not read for anyone under the age of 18.  For each tarot reading a brochure booklet is provided - with inserts.  The inserts show the layout and have spaces provided for you to write notes during the reading.  The most common layout that I do this the Celtic Cross.

If you would like a reading with Denise then please contact her for an appointment.

Please see the contact and pricing page for further information.
